Paul Underwood, MD, FACC, FSCAI is a native of Knoxville, TN and attended Morehouse College for premedical studies. He received an MD degree from Mayo Clinic-Rochester, followed by cardiology fellowship at Cleveland Clinic. His interventional cardiology training was done at Iowa Heart Center in Des Moines. Before becoming a cardiologist, he directed the ER and ICU at St. Croix Hospital in the US Virgin Islands. After completing cardiology training, Dr. Underwood practiced interventional cardiology and clinical research in Phoenix, AZ for over 18 years. In 2009 he left clinical practice to become a medical director in Boston Scientific’s cardiology franchise. In Phoenix Dr. Underwood held several hospital committee appointments and was a member of the Arizona Council of the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Underwood has been actively involved in many community-based cardiovascular health projects. His past presidency of the Association of Black Cardiologists and founder of the Center for African American Health-AZ underscore his passion to achieve health equity. His work with the local American Heart Association Desert Mountain Affiliate led to his participation on their national Women and Minority Leadership Committee, the Power To End Stroke Advisory Committee and the Science Advisory & Coordinating Committee. At Boston Scientific, Dr. Underwood received the Interventional Cardiology Business Unit Diversity Award for his work with the PLATINUM Diversity trial, the landmark interventional cardiology study to focus on social determinant of health in women and minorities treated with coronary stents. He also received the National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Chairperson’s Award for partnership with Close the Gap, Boston Scientific’s health equity education initiative. Dr. Underwood’s current duties include clinical trials and risk management for cardiology devices. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and has been a clinical investigator for more than 90 clinical trials.
